A little support can mean a brighter future for Matei.
Matei-Efrem is a sociable, lively 6-year-old boy. Like other children his age, he loves playing and being around other kids, but for Matei, these everyday experiences require much more effort.
For every step. For every dream. For his future.
Matei was born at 38 weeks with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and Chiari II malformation. These diagnoses brought many questions, difficult moments and challenges into our family. He underwent surgery on his second day of life, followed by many medical check-ups, rehabilitation sessions and a long journey faced with patience and the belief that things would get better.
Spina bifida mainly affected the lower part of his body. Matei has no sensation in his feet, and both his mobility and bladder and bowel control have been affected.
Despite all of this, Matei has always been determined and hardworking, and that has helped him overcome many obstacles. He learned to crawl on all fours at 1 year and 4 months, was supported into standing with the help of several devices, and at the age of 5 he managed to walk independently.
He still needs support at times, but he is able to explore many places on his own.

Over the years, Matei has undergone several surgeries and rehabilitation therapies. He will continue to need custom-made orthoses, as well as specialists who can monitor his progress and help him become as independent as possible.
Rehabilitation and therapy will always be part of Matei’s life.
Alongside his therapies, Matei also attends kindergarten, where he is surrounded by people who believe in him and encourage him. These interactions matter greatly because we want his disability to never define his future.
